constraints, inspired by Mies van der Rohe’s concept of “freely spaced planes.” Traditional dining layouts often feel either too open or too closed; here, the design seeks balance—dynamic yet calm, open yet private—through rhythm, light, and material. Set in an old warehouse in Guiyang’s historic district, once a mooncake factory for the Guilong Hotel, the project transforms the space into a hybrid of Japanese yakiniku restaurant and Western-style bar. The design layers atmosphere, function, and structure: the bar shapes the ambience, the restaurant defines the scale, and the industrial shell provides texture and light. Gray basalt “floating walls” of varying heights divide the interior, offering privacy while maintaining spatial flow. Their deliberate arrangement balances visibility and enclosure, creating a dynamic spatial rhythm. The façade preserves the existing red brick texture, partially broken to reveal a handcrafted quality that integrates with the surrounding cityscape. High windows—retained despite redevelopment pressures—bring ritual and light to the space, glowing softly at night as part of the bar’s luminous composition. Industrial traces are subtly kept: plastered walls, exposed frames, and hidden systems maintain simplicity. Three material layers—wood veneer ceilings, basalt partitions, and wooden furniture—form a warm, restrained palette. Custom tables conceal ventilation ducts within sculptural legs, uniting function and form. The visual identity design extends this spatial language through curved and linear elements, creating coherence between architecture and branding. The result is a modern yet grounded interpretation of Japanese aesthetics—balancing openness and privacy, roughness and refinement, stillness and motion. <img width="2500" height="1667" width_o="2500" We have no desire to completely replicate tradition, nor do we wish to completely ignore it. Simultaneously, we preserved the logic of the traditional wooden structure and the spatial relationships. length, width and height of nearly 6 meters for a studio space. This space is not generous for an office. If one were to pursue the space to its maximum size, the usual way to transform it would be to divide it into two levels, which would give us more space, but at the same time reduce it to a production machine and a slave to efficiency, and the many possibilities and qualities it had would be lost. Having grown tired of the industrial homogeneity of the office environment, we wanted to create a workplace that could be more responsive to our needs, more flexible and constantly inspring.The Grand StaircaseThe key to the design is the organisation of the traffic space – a large staircase that takes up half of the floor area, making it the natural core of the entire space. It is not only a functional component connecting the floors, but also the main venue for the studio to display models, read, rest, hold screenings and various events. This multi-functional steps, which often appear in libraries and public spaces, have an even greater significance for the small space. There is an additional vertical plane between the first floor and the second floor, and the whole space becomes more connected and organic. The grand staircase consists of a hollow steel frame. The first level is a retractable structure, which can be retracted when needed to enlarge the usable area of the first floor and meet more needs. The beneath of the steps is used as a material room and storage space. In such a small space that is not very spacious, as a challenge for a very small office space, we created a different office space through the placement of a seemingly familiar large stair. Here, in addition to meeting normal office needs, we can also have more opportunities to communicate and share, while combining display and breakout spaces as well. The complexity and dynamism of the space takes place in a seemingly single space that adapts as the user changes. This space fulfils all our ideas for office space, and embodies our design philosophy that space should have vitality and narrative, hence the term ‘narrative space’ . <img width="2000" height="1479" the Yaoziyu Ditch in the north-west of Jiuduhe Town, Huairou District, Beijing, was built in the Ming Dynasty and is still home to 13 families in what was once a military defense site. The bridge yard, a contemporary courtyard-style residential structure, is located in the northeast corner of the fortress and is a completely new courtyard. Humanity’s reliance on industrialization has reached an unprecedented level, from its beginnings as a convenience to the people to a point of total dependence, where human hands are gradually being withdrawn from making and perceiving into a numbing tool that only taps on screens and delivers food to the mouth. This is consciously and unconsciously changing the way people see and think of the world. We are always vigilant and suspicious of this. Therefore, in this design, we wish to bring people back intentionally. By creating a sense of craftsmanship through the very fundamental construction methods, we wish people to come here to touch, feel and think with their deep hearts. from the architectural remains of the Yaoziyu Fortress, which was a common exterior material that is now being forgotten. This material, which has survived the ages, is, in our opinion, the perfect choice for reconstructing the history and memory of the site. With regard to the window and door system, we had a different idea. Firstly, we have abandoned the more industrialized system of break-bridge aluminum, and have instead adopted a system of square steel keel with bamboo an d timber panels as the envelope structure made by workers on site, while considering the openable function as an extension of the 'door' rather than a window, avoiding the cumbersome practice of opening windows on conventional glass and simplifying the toughened double glazing to a single. The purity of the building façade in terms of solidity and transparency is expressed, thus making the specific construction effective and pointing to a combination of function and aesthetics. The handcrafted feel of the building is an undeniable testimony to the creation of a tangible entity.
